Mindset and Attitude: The Keys to Success in Politics and Business

In a world filled with competition and challenges, mindset and attitude play crucial roles in determining success. When trying to influence others, the most important factor isn’t what we see or say, but who we are and what we bring to the table. Let’s delve into these important factors and how they shape our thoughts and actions.

Who Are You?

First and foremost, we need to understand who we are. What is our position in society or our industry? Are we competitors, leaders, or experts in our field? Our credibility is often defined by the facts we’ve established throughout our careers, including our knowledge, experience, and track record of achievements and failures. All these elements shape our image and influence over others.

My Mindset and Attitude

I believe in analyzing and strategizing based on detailed information. I don’t readily accept what others say without thorough investigation. Trusting in my intellectual judgment and conclusions is fundamental to every decision I make. This attitude is crucial because it shapes how we face challenges and achieve success.

Changing Mindset and Attitude

Changing one’s mindset and attitude is not a simple task. Many talk about the need for this change, but few truly understand the concept and process. Just like mechanisms and systems require knowledge, formulas, and procedures to be repaired or changed, mindset and attitude also require a systematic approach. Without this understanding, how can we change ourselves, let alone others or an organisation?

The Importance of Corporate Culture

For those managing an organisation, developing the mindset and attitude of employees and establishing a corporate culture is critical. For example, an organisation’s vision and mission statements play a significant role in shaping the thoughts and attitudes of its staff. In the corporate world, customers are considered kings who pay for our services, and the company exists to fulfill their needs, not the other way around. This requires us to provide services that exceed customer expectations and to maintain a competitive edge for continuous growth, profitability, and sustainability.

Goals and Responsibilities

Our goals should be clear:

  • Customers: Provide value and satisfaction worth their money.
  • Employees: Offer good benefits and job satisfaction.
  • Employers: Ensure a good return on investment and risk.
  • Government and Society: Be good taxpayers and fulfill corporate social responsibilities.

The Reality of Politics

In the political realm, we often hear a lot of talk without a solid foundation. This has led to the loss of direction and purpose in Malay politics. The fall of the largest Malay party is evidence of this failure. Compared to a corporate giant like Sime Darby, which has survived over two centuries, Malay politics seems unstable and unable to face future challenges successfully.

Conclusion

We need to examine three types of mindsets that have been established:

  1. Colonial Mindset: Established 600 years ago with imperialistic thinking.
  2. Colonised Mindset: A feudal and servile mindset imposed by the West 500 years ago, filled with fear of taking risks and negativity.
  3. Immigrant Mindset: Those who seek opportunities and wealth in foreign lands.

Understanding these mindsets is crucial to understanding why we often lag behind and how we can change for the better. The feudal attitude we hold leads us to readily agree with leaders without question, lose power, and incur significant losses. Only by understanding and changing these mindsets and attitudes can we move forward.

Final Thoughts

Changing mindsets and attitudes is a significant task that requires deep experience and understanding. We must bravely face the truth about our weaknesses and work hard to improve ourselves and our organisations. Only in this way can we achieve lasting success in this challenging world.
