In a world where material wealth often dictates social status and opportunity, being born into poverty can be seen as a significant disadvantage. Yet, for many, including myself, being born into a poor family is not a liability but an invaluable asset. This perspective shift is crucial for turning adversity into a driving force for success.
Recognising Poverty as an Asset, Not a Liability
Understanding that poverty is an asset rather than a liability is the first step towards transforming one’s life. When we view poverty as an asset, we uncover the inherent strengths and utility it possesses. This mindset allows us to plan and strategize effectively, leveraging the strengths derived from our humble beginnings.
The Power of a Big Dream
A grand vision is essential for pushing beyond imagination. It serves as the highest form of motivation and strength. While we plan and strive, it is ultimately God who determines the outcome. Therefore, we must pair our dreams with prayer, effort, and trust in divine will.
Competing Against Privilege
Throughout my journey, I’ve had to compete with peers from affluent backgrounds, children of educated parents, high-ranking officials, and established businessmen. Despite starting from a disadvantaged position, the experience of competing with these individuals in various fields, be it career, politics, or education, has been invaluable. This competition honed my abilities, making me resilient and adaptable.
Learning from Both Worlds
Having experienced life both in poverty and relative wealth, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each. This dual perspective is crucial for planning and strategising to ensure that my family’s history does not regress into poverty. This type of knowledge is not typically taught in prestigious institutions like Harvard but is learned through life’s trials and triumphs.
The Missteps in Western Metrics of Success
Upon retirement, many individuals feel equipped with knowledge, skills, and a strong desire to contribute to society. However, up to 90% of them face disappointment and failure. One significant reason for this is the reliance on Western models of success, which often do not account for individual limitations and unique circumstances.
Tailoring Goals to Individual Capacity
Instead of setting lofty goals for others to achieve, it is essential to align our targets with our personal capabilities. This involves focusing on:
- Our physical and mental capacities
- Our personal values
- Our individual efforts
- Our metrics of success and satisfaction
By doing so, we ensure that our goals are realistic and within our grasp, thereby minimising disappointment and enhancing personal fulfillment.
The Role of the Individual in the Larger Picture
Each of us is but a single point in the vast mosaic of society and the nation. Our success lies in performing our designated roles to the best of our abilities. This individual effort contributes to the larger success of society, forming a collective achievement. If we fulfill our roles diligently, we have succeeded, regardless of the overall outcome.
The Divine Measure of Success
True success is measured by our adherence to divine guidance, doing what is commanded and avoiding what is prohibited. This keeps us on the straight path. The example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is instructive here. His mission was to deliver the message, to be a role model, and to teach his companions. It was not his responsibility to ensure everyone embraced Islam. Similarly, our success is not determined by the acceptance of our efforts by others but by our commitment to our responsibilities.
Conclusion
In following the example of the Prophet, we find the blueprint for success and fulfillment. By understanding our roles, aligning our goals with our capacities, and trusting in divine wisdom, we achieve true satisfaction and success in life. Our individual contributions, no matter how small, are part of a larger, beautiful picture. There is no failure in giving our best, only in not trying at all. Alhamdulillah, we are grateful for the journey and the lessons learned.
