Recently, UMNO President, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, emphasised in his speech that the party must undertake an extraordinary shift to ensure UMNO is no longer trapped by the negative perceptions held by the public. He stressed that this change is no longer optional or mere political rhetoric, it is a pressing necessity for the survival of the party.
This raises a critical question, what kind of change is needed for UMNO to not only remain politically relevant but also become a true home for all Malays?
1. UMNO as the Home of the Malays
For decades, UMNO has been seen as the party that champions Malay interests. Yet, public perception shows a growing gap between the party and the grassroots. To regain trust, UMNO must position itself not just as a political party but as an institution that protects the Malay agenda, covering areas such as economy, education, culture, and social well-being. It must be a place where every Malay feels heard, valued, and safeguarded.

2. Willingness to Change, Even When Painful
Change is never easy, especially for a party with deep-rooted history and structures. But, as the President emphasised, UMNO must be ready to embrace painful changes. This includes reassessing outdated approaches, eliminating detrimental practices, and opening up space for new ideas that align with the realities of today’s Malaysia.
3. Listening to UMNO Youth
A critical aspect of this transformation is the willingness to listen. UMNO Youth is not just a party wing, it is a source of energy, ideas, and perspectives for the future. Critiques and suggestions from this wing may sometimes challenge traditional practices, but UMNO must view them as opportunities rather than threats. Ignoring the voice of the younger generation risks alienating them, the very generation that will shape the future of the Malay community.
4. Solutions that Safeguard the Malay Agenda and Nation-Building
UMNO must develop clear and practical strategies to protect the Malay agenda, including:
- Education and skills development to ensure Malays remain competitive in the modern economy.
- Economic empowerment, supporting Malay businesses and strategic asset ownership initiatives.
- Inclusive political approaches, balancing Malay interests with nation-building without marginalizing other communities.
- Strengthening cultural and moral values, ensuring the Malay identity remains a pillar of national identity.
What Should We Do
UMNO stands at a crossroads. Without real change, negative perceptions will persist, and the confidence of the Malay community will erode. However, with willingness to change, to listen, and to implement the right solutions, UMNO can become a true home for all Malays and a guardian of the Malay agenda while contributing to nation-building.
The extraordinary shift President Zahid calls for is more than a slogan, it is a call for deep transformation. If carried out with courage and sincerity, it can ensure the party remains relevant, respected, and trusted by both the current and future generations.
