Note from Dr Sharifah Mazlina
In a recent turn of events, the mission to break the siege of Gaza, organised by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), has faced significant hurdles. Eighteen delegates from Malaysia arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 2:45 this afternoon following their final training session for the mission in Istanbul, Turkey, which began on April 18th.
However, due to the latest developments, the sailing mission to Gaza has been postponed to a date to be announced later by the FFC. This decision comes after intense pressure from the Israeli regime on the Republic of Guinea-Bissau to withdraw its flag from the mission’s main vessel, the Akdeniz (Mediterranean).
The FFC has taken legal action against the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, which succumbed to Israeli pressure and denied the use of its flag for the sailing mission. This move is seen as part of Israel’s relentless tactics to thwart humanitarian aid efforts to Gaza.
Commenting on the situation, MyCARE Chairman Dato’ Seri Ir Dr Kamal Nasharuddin Mustapha condemned these actions, labeling them as dirty tactics employed by the Israeli regime to sabotage the aid mission to Gaza. Kamal further stated that MyCARE has reached out to the Malaysian government to support the Republic of Guinea-Bissau in granting permission to use its flag.
Simultaneously, the FFC is actively seeking flags from other nations by initiating registration processes, aiming to facilitate the humanitarian sailing mission to Gaza in the near future.
The obstacles faced by the FFC highlight the ongoing challenges in providing essential aid to the people of Gaza and underscore the importance of international solidarity in addressing humanitarian crises. Despite these setbacks, efforts to break the siege and deliver much-needed assistance to Gaza continue unabated.
