In school, we were taught history through the lens of glorification, each country crafting narratives that often glossed over monumental blunders, mistakes, and weaknesses in favor of highlighting successes. Malaysia is no exception. Despite our glorified accounts of Malacca and independence, the reality is marred by significant weaknesses, grave blunders, and unforgivable mistakes. These historical inaccuracies continue to shape our present, leading to the repetition of past mistakes and blunders.
In a democratic society, the influence of the majority, often less knowledgeable, can result in the exploitation of the masses, where truth is often overshadowed by falsehoods. The consequences of this manipulation are evident today, as the populace finds itself trapped in a blame-game political landscape.
Reflecting on our Independence, devoid of bloodshed, begs the question: why? The answer lies in the grander scheme orchestrated by Western imperialists to decolonise nations and establish a global hierarchy. Through tactics such as divide and rule, constitutionalising land laws, imposing democracy, controlling the economy, and asserting military dominance, they perpetuated exploitation on a global scale.
Our political landscape, mindset, and attitudes remain fixated on race, culture, language, and religion, deeply ingrained over five centuries. Meanwhile, the relative neglect of our economy and national wealth potential has fostered complacency, allowing foreign interests to exploit our resources without resistance.
While Western imperialists comprehended and adapted to this reality, many Malaysians, including some of our leaders, remain oblivious to the ongoing exploitation and control. Without a genuine awakening, our plans and aspirations will continue to fall short, leaving us scrambling to address immediate issues without a grasp of the dynamic national and global landscape.
It’s imperative for both leaders and citizens alike to recognise our two greatest assets: vast land and a majority population. Drawing lessons from China’s resurgence after centuries of oppression, we must leverage our abundant resources to assert ourselves in both the national and global arenas.
In essence, to break free from the shackles of historical misinterpretation and exploitation, Malaysia must undergo a collective awakening, where leaders and citizens alike embrace a forward-thinking mindset focused on harnessing our true potential for the benefit of all Malaysians. Only then can we steer the nation towards a future defined by prosperity, equality, and genuine independence.
