As I stood by the graveside, reminiscing about the late Tun Hanif, the chairman board of advisor MPM, whom I had known and collaborated with for over a decade, a flood of memories washed over me. It was a serene morning, the day of his burial, as I visited Kiara Cemetery to ensure his final resting place. Upon inquiry, I was directed to Masjid Negara. As I offered prayers and supplications for his soul, a thought crossed my mind perhaps Kiara Cemetery would have been a more fitting resting place.
In my heart, I sincerely believed so, and whatever unfolded thereafter seemed to affirm it. It was my personal experience that Kiara Cemetery provided a better ambiance for Tun Hanif. Its spaciousness, comfort, and easy accessibility make it ideal for visits by family, friends, and anyone who wishes to pay their respects. Unlike the societal distinctions in life, where one’s lineage or status matters, here everyone is equal in their final abode, bestowed with the same title – Arwah, a term of endearment meaning ‘May Allah have mercy.’
Kiara Cemetery, resembling a tranquil garden amidst the bustling urban landscape, serves as a poignant reminder of the transient nature of life. It compels us to contemplate the ceaseless pursuit of worldly affairs and the ultimate solitude that awaits us all.
Reflecting on personal experiences, I recall the passing of my beloved wife on December 21st. Though it felt like just yesterday, I embraced her departure with resignation and without remorse. During the first 100 days of her passing, I made it a daily ritual to visit her grave, recite prayers, and offer supplications. Subsequently, weekly visits became a norm, especially after Friday prayers, spending a mere 10 minutes at the mosque before proceeding to her graveside. The same reverence is extended to the graves of my parents whenever I return to my hometown.
The comforting environment of the cemetery, coupled with the constant presence of visitors, especially on weekends and festive occasions, makes each visit feel like a serene pilgrimage. The absence of fear or loneliness stems from the assurance that one is never truly alone in their final resting place. Even at 6:30 in the evening, the cemetery exudes a sense of peace and security, prompting me to pay my respects without hesitation.
Through these experiences, I’ve come to realise the significance of choosing a burial ground close to home. It not only facilitates regular visits but also serves as a constant reminder of our mortality and the inevitability of our journey’s end.
As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) wisely advised, “The wisest among you is the one who remembers death the most and the happiest among you is the one who is best prepared for it.” Death, therefore, serves as life’s most profound lesson, reminding us of our mortality and our true essence.
Transitioning into a new phase of life following retirement, I have adopted a new identity – @CheHeng. Gone are the days of being known by titles and accolades; now, I am simply an ordinary individual. Instead of dwelling on past glories and achievements, I focus on utilising the gifts of knowledge, expertise, and experience bestowed upon me.
Looking ahead, I strive to allocate my time wisely, balancing obligations to self, family, and society. Worship, as an expression of gratitude to the Almighty, transcends mere rituals; it encompasses a life devoted to serving others and making a positive impact in the world.
Guided by the principles of charity, sharing knowledge, and selfless service, I endeavor to lead a life that is both rewarding in this world and the Hereafter. In doing so, I remain mindful of avoiding sinful deeds while seeking opportunities to do good, regardless of others’ perceptions.
In conclusion, as we navigate the complexities of life, let us not forget the inevitability of death. Embracing this reality enables us to lead purposeful lives, grounded in gratitude, humility, and compassion. May we all find guidance and enlightenment in the remembrance of our mortality, and may our actions reflect our readiness for the journey that lies ahead. Ameen.
