In the journey of life, we are bestowed with the divine gift of reason by Allah, the Most Merciful and Wise. This gift, known as “akal” in Islam, is a remarkable tool gifted to humanity to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. However, if left unchecked, it may succumb to the whims of desire.
In Surah al-Nahl, verse 78, Allah reminds us of His blessings, stating that He has granted us hearing, sight, and hearts to understand. This underscores the importance of gratitude and utilising our intellects to seek truth and understand the essence of existence.
The Quran and Hadith repeatedly emphasise the significance of intellect and urge humans to contemplate and utilise it wisely. Yet, despite these reminders, there are those who fail to appreciate this divine endowment, as mentioned in Surah al-Hasyr, verse 2.
Furthermore, neglecting the guidance of religion can lead to disastrous consequences, as highlighted in Surah al-A’raf, verse 179. Those who disregard the signs of Allah are likened to cattle, wandering aimlessly in ignorance.
Islam, while encouraging critical thinking, sets limits to prevent deviation into realms beyond human comprehension or mere whimsical desires. The story of the Mujassimah sect serves as a cautionary tale, demonstrating the peril of allowing intellect to stray from the guidance of faith.
Indeed, intellect is a powerful tool, but its true value lies in its alignment with divine guidance. Surah al-Syura, verse 11, reminds us that nothing compares to Allah, and our intellects are limited in comprehending the unseen.
Therefore, it is imperative to harness our intellects in accordance with the teachings of Islam. As stated in Surah al-Imran, verses 190-191, those who reflect upon the signs of Allah with gratitude and seek His guidance are truly blessed.
In conclusion, let us acknowledge and honour the divine gift of reason bestowed upon us by Allah. By using our intellects in harmony with the teachings of Islam, we embark on a journey of spiritual enlightenment and fulfilment. May we always be grateful for this noble gift and strive to utilise it for the betterment of ourselves and humanity.
