The Disconnect in Our Education System: Failing to Nurture Self-Awareness Amidst a Knowledge Explosion

In the 1970s and 1990s, my academic journey took me through ITM and IIUM, institutions that shaped my understanding and skills in ways that continue to influence me today. However, as I reflect on those years and compare them with today’s rapidly advancing world, particularly in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), I can’t help but feel a profound concern. Our education system, while striving to impart vast amounts of knowledge, seems to neglect a fundamental aspect of personal development: helping students understand who they truly are.

Knowledge Over Self-Awareness

The modern education system is a double-edged sword. On one side, it equips students with a plethora of information, technical skills, and academic credentials. On the other, it often fails to provide the space and support necessary for students to explore and understand their own identities, strengths, and passions.

In our current educational landscape, there is a heavy emphasis on academic achievement and the acquisition of knowledge. Students are pressured to excel in exams, master complex subjects, and achieve high grades. While these are important, they overshadow a critical component of education: self-awareness.

The rapid evolution of AI technology is reshaping job markets and creating new opportunities and challenges.
