New Norm New Thinking

The Revival of UMNO: Reflecting on Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s Keynote Address at PAU 2024

“Let us not think we are as dominant as we once were. Do not be lulled by the slander and accusations of the opposition to the point where we sow doubt among ourselves. Do not be complacent with the little power we have that we forget the task of strengthening the party.” These were some of the key points from the keynote address delivered by UMNO President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, at the 2024 UMNO General Assembly (PAU 2024). This speech was not mere political rhetoric but a timely and firm reminder to all UMNO members.

Ahmad Zahid emphasised that in today’s challenging political landscape, there is no room for doubt or division within the party. UMNO must unite and mobilise its efforts, not point fingers or blame one another when faced with challenges. Now is the time for all members to remember the party’s founding struggles and reinforce the sense of belonging that has long been the foundation of nation-building.

This address also highlighted the crucial awareness that UMNO can no longer rely on the nostalgia of past successes. Past achievements do not guarantee future victories, and this is the core message Ahmad Zahid sought to convey. UMNO was once the dominant and seemingly invincible force in the country’s political arena, but today’s situation requires a more dynamic and proactive approach.

Ahmad Zahid is not a leader who sits idly by in the face of challenges. He has outlined three political principles as a guide for navigating the increasingly complex political realities of the country. First, setting targets for parliamentary seat dominance to ensure that UMNO once again becomes the party that forms the government. Second, opening avenues for collaboration with political coalitions that uphold the primacy of Islam and Malay identity. Third, ensuring moderate politics by taking a middle path as a model of consensus capable of preserving national stability.

These three political principles reflect Ahmad Zahid’s commitment to bringing UMNO back to its path of glory. UMNO must dare to step out of its “echo chamber” and comfort zone, and confront new ideas and perspectives to remain relevant in today’s political landscape.
