Values, Lies, and the Fragile Quest for Global Dignity

“All men are created equal.”

These immortal words etched into the American Declaration of Independence once inspired generations to believe in liberty, justice, and human dignity. But today, those same words echo hollowly across the globe, drowned by the thunder of airstrikes, the screams of injustice, and the silent complicity of a world order that claims to defend peace but props up war machines instead.

In a world saturated with surveillance and artificial intelligence, we can measure everything from human behavior to geopolitical trends. But no algorithm is needed to detect the crumbling values around us. The pursuit of peace, long a noble goal, now feels more like an afterthought to power plays, propaganda, and profit.

A World Out of Balance

Our modern crises, poverty, inequality, climate change, and violent conflicts, are not inevitable. They are man-made consequences of abandoned values and manufactured lies. Friendship, love, and tolerance are more powerful than enmity and hatred, but too often, they are eclipsed by narrow interests and weaponised narratives.

Take, for instance, the enduring conflict in the Middle East. A tiny state, created by a UN resolution and shaped by waves of Jewish migration seeking refuge from persecution, planted its flag in Jerusalem, a city holy to three faiths. In the decades since, Israel has expanded far beyond its original borders through military campaigns and occupation, violating countless UN resolutions while enjoying unwavering Western support.

History shows that colonial powers like Britain laid the groundwork for this chaos. The United States then took the baton, championing the so-called “American Dream” of liberty and equality while turning a blind eye to the darker chapters of its own past, slavery, genocide, and systemic racism.

Today, that dream is fraying. A 2023 academic study found that intergenerational poverty in the U.S. is significantly worse than in European nations, casting a shadow over claims of equality and opportunity. New values, narcissism, self-interest, and exceptionalism, have replaced the ideals of justice and fairness.

Empire of Lies?

Russian President Vladimir Putin once labeled the West as an “empire of lies.” Many may dismiss the source, but the critique demands contemplation. From weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to media manipulations during the COVID-19 pandemic, the West has often shaped narratives to justify interference, regime change, and war. Truth becomes malleable. Justice is selective.

And nowhere is this more evident than in the response to the recent Gaza conflict. Israel’s retaliation for the events of October 7, 2023, has escalated into what many believe is collective punishment, targeting civilians, journalists, and even medical infrastructure. Gaza is under siege. Yet, the language of “self-defense” continues to mask atrocities.

Meanwhile, Iran is struck by air attacks on its nuclear facilities, with both Israel and the U.S. claiming disassociation while sending mixed diplomatic signals. U.S. President Donald Trump boasted of foreknowledge, expressing no concern about war escalation as long as Iran is denied nuclear capabilities. As of June 19, plans to attack Iran are reportedly greenlit.

Since October 2023, the U.S. has poured at least $43 billion into the region, with Israel being the largest cumulative recipient of American aid, amounting to over $310 billion (adjusted for inflation). Are these the actions of peacekeepers or patrons of power?

Arab Values, Forgotten Dignity?

In contrast, Arab cultures, rooted in Islam, emphasise dignity, honor, and spiritual devotion. The faith calls for justice, truth, and compassion, extending far beyond rituals into ethics and governance. But where is the moral leadership today?

Despite having 55 member states, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) remains politically impotent. The Muslim world, almost two billion strong, watches as their brothers and sisters bleed. Where are the Quranic principles guiding peace treaties and responses? Where is the defense of dignity and humanity?

Arabs are a diverse people, ethnically Semitic like the Jews, yet unity remains elusive. Religious and nationalistic differences are exploited by global powers, keeping the region fragmented and dependent.

The Hypocrisy of “Freedom”

Western media has mastered the art of double standards. When Palestinians resist, they are branded as terrorists. When civilians are bombed, it’s labeled as “collateral damage.” When starvation is used as a weapon, it’s silence. And all of it is wrapped in the language of freedom and democracy.

How long can the Holocaust be invoked to justify present-day war crimes? Judaism, like Islam and Christianity, is rooted in the teachings of prophets and moral obedience to God. Yet, the Zionist state strays far from this spiritual lineage, prioritising conquest over covenant.

The Bible warned the Israelites that obedience would bring blessings, and rebellion would bring curses (Deuteronomy 28). The Quran, too, honors the Children of Israel but rebukes those who distorted scripture and ignored divine law. Disobedience then, and disobedience now, cannot be hidden behind divine promises.

What’s Next?

Today, more than half of U.S. adults hold unfavorable views of Israel, and over half of Israelis believe their country lacks global respect. Israeli politicians accuse their own Prime Minister of war crimes. Meanwhile, global military spending soared to an unprecedented $2.4 trillion in 2023. Sixty-one armed conflicts raged worldwide, the highest ever recorded.

How can peace thrive under such conditions? Why do we fear climate change but not nuclear war? Why are weapons of war more cherished than tools of reconciliation?

We stand at a moral crossroads. The pursuit of global peace cannot survive in a world of lies, deceptions, and moral apathy. We need a full reform of global governance. A system that prioritises justice over geopolitics, human rights over strategic interests, and truth over propaganda.

A Final Hope

We often wonder if peace is even possible in our time. But there was a president who, despite controversy, held the record of starting no new wars during his tenure. Perhaps such restraint, whether by intent or accident, is a blueprint for the future.

Global peace will not come from the barrel of a gun, nor from broken promises. It begins with truth, with values, and with dignity, earned, not bought.
