The Steering Committee of the Malay Consultative Council (Majlis Perundingan Melayu, MPM) has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to advocating for the welfare and rights of the Malay and Bumiputera communities. This commitment was echoed by Datuk Salamon Selamat during his inaugural speech as the newly appointed Chairman of the MPM Steering Committee for the 2025–2029 term.

The appointment ceremony, held at Wisma MPM in Kuala Lumpur, also marked MPM’s 16th anniversary since its establishment in 2009. Reflecting on the council’s journey, Datuk Salamon emphasised the need for continued resilience in safeguarding the aspirations of the Malay and Bumiputera people.
“With the support of the newly appointed team and the collaboration of all MPM members, we are determined to sustain the excellent work MPM has accomplished as a platform for the Malay cause,” he said. He also paid tribute to the leaders and figures of MPM who have passed away, acknowledging their contributions to the council’s vision.
A Legacy of Unity and Vision
Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang, Deputy Founding Chairman of MPM, expressed his hopes for the council to maintain its pivotal role in addressing the challenges faced by the Malay and Bumiputera communities. Highlighting the critical state of unity among the Malays, Abu Zahar voiced concerns over the potential long-term consequences of political disunity.
“At present, the Malays appear fragmented. I worry about the future of our grandchildren if political leadership no longer remains in Malay hands,” he remarked. His message to the newly appointed Steering Committee was clear: “Be what you are, and remain steadfast in your purpose.”
MPM Action for the Future
Datuk Dr. Hasan Mad, Secretary-General of MPM, provided a sobering yet hopeful perspective on the council’s mission. According to him, MPM must act decisively to navigate through the challenges ahead while creating its own path of light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
“That light is the beacon for our descendants,” he said. Hasan cautioned against complacency, reminding the attendees that others have already tightened their grip on economic, financial, educational, linguistic, and cultural power.
“They are already on the doorstep of political dominance. Once they enter, they will not retreat. Let us awaken and take heed,” he warned.
Strengthening the Pillars of Malay Unity
As the council embarks on a new term under the leadership of Datuk Salamon, the message is clear: MPM remains steadfast in its role as a defender of Malay and Bumiputera interests. The continuity of this mission is essential, not just for the present generation but also for the future of the nation’s cultural and political identity.
In the face of growing challenges, MPM’s Steering Committee stands as a symbol of unity and resolve, ready to tackle the demands of an evolving landscape while staying true to its founding principles.
