Who will be the champion of Euro 2024? England or Spain? On paper, Spain is the favorite. The team has won all their matches in style, including defeating the host nation, Germany, in the quarter-finals. England, on the other hand, has struggled to reach the final.
When talking about Spain, I am reminded of the 1982 World Cup held there. I spent a month in Spain watching the World Cup (Espana Du Mundial), where Italy emerged as champions by defeating Germany 3-1 in the final match.
For me, that was one of the best World Cups ever. Who could forget the brilliance of the Brazilian team led by Socrates and Zico? Unfortunately, they fell in the quarter-finals, losing 3-2 to Italy, with Paolo Rossi’s hat trick dashing Brazil’s hopes.
And who can forget the semi-final match between Germany and France? Although Germany won, the match is remembered for the rough challenge by German goalkeeper Schumacher on Patrick Battiston, which left Battiston needing to be stretchered off the field.
Now, back to tonight’s match. As mentioned, Spain is the favorite, but don’t be surprised if England pulls off an upset.
Who is my pick? Given that Spain gave me such wonderful memories during my month-long stay in 1982, my choice tonight is Spain. Viva España!
A football fan who spent a month in Spain in 1982.
