As we mark the tenth anniversary of Steve Jobs’ passing, Sir Jony Ive, former chief design officer of Apple, shares a poignant remembrance in WSJ Magazine. Ive’s reflections offer a deeply personal glimpse into his friendship and creative partnership with Jobs, shedding light on how their collaboration continues to inspire his work today.
A Bond Forged in Creativity
Jony Ive and Steve Jobs began their storied partnership in 1997 when Jobs appointed Ive as Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design. This professional relationship quickly blossomed into a close friendship. In his remembrance, Ive reveals, “We worked together for nearly 15 years. We had lunch together most days and spent our afternoons in the sanctuary of the design studio. Those were some of the happiest, most creative and joyful times of my life.”
Ive’s memories paint a picture of Jobs as an exceptionally curious individual, a trait he believes was central to their successful collaboration. “He was without doubt the most curious human I have ever met,” Ive recalls. Jobs’ curiosity wasn’t just innate but a disciplined choice, a commitment to exploring ideas over asserting correctness.
The Visionary’s Approach to Design
Jobs’ willingness to embrace the “terrifyingly new” and his reverence for tentative ideas defined his visionary approach. “For Steve, wanting to learn was far more important than wanting to be right,” Ive notes. This philosophy underpinned Jobs’ belief in giving great ideas the respect they deserved, irrespective of the circumstances.
Reflecting on Jobs’ legacy, Ive emphasizes his dedication to simplicity, truth, and purity. “Above all else, I have come to appreciate and understand his singular and beautiful clarity that defeated the chaos, the roar of opinion and ugly rush to judge.” This clarity, according to Ive, was driven by a profound love for humanity and a desire to create something empowering, beautiful, and culturally significant.
The Birth of LoveFrom
In 2019, Ive left Apple to establish LoveFrom, a creative collective inspired by Jobs’ ideals. Based in London and San Francisco, LoveFrom unites designers, architects, musicians, filmmakers, writers, engineers, and artists in a collaborative environment. Ive attributes the collective’s name to “Steve’s singular and powerful motivation.”
Among LoveFrom’s notable collaborations are partnerships with global leaders like Airbnb and Exor (Ferrari’s holding company). Recently, they announced a collaboration with The Emerson Collective, founded by Laurene Powell Jobs, Steve’s widow. “Laurene and I are close,” Ive shares. “Our families have been close for nearly 30 years. […] Mostly, we talk about the future and her extraordinary and inspiring work with the Emerson Collective.”
A Personal Farewell
Ive’s tribute to Jobs is not just professional but profoundly personal. He recounts their final moments together, with Jobs’ last words expressing how he would miss their conversations. Reflecting on this, Ive remarks, “I thought how talking often gets in the way of listening and thinking. Perhaps that is why so much of our time together was spent quietly walking or eating.” He concludes with heartfelt sentiment, “I miss Steve desperately and I will always miss not talking to him.”
As we remember Steve Jobs ten years on, Jony Ive’s reflections remind us of the indelible mark left by their partnership. Jobs’ legacy lives on not only in Apple’s groundbreaking products but also in the creative endeavors and philosophies he inspired in those who knew him best.
